Jermaine Jenas pays a visit to Landau Forte School

The Aquinas Foundation were asked to help a group of students at Landau Forte School in Derby. The group were individually selected due to the fact that they were all students who could achieve much more than they were currently achieving in terms of grades and attitude.

It was a mixed group of students both male and female all from year 11 which is viewed as a crucial time in their schooling career.

This is what Jermaine had to say;

“I was asked to visit Landau Forte school to talk to a select group of students who are capable of achieving a lot more than they are at present. A group of 35 mixed yr 11 pupils who need a little guidance and motivation to succeed in life. This is something I feel very strongly about and the aim of this session is to have a positive impact on all of the children involved. This is the reason I helped to set up The Aquinas foundation… To give aspiration to children in education in the East Midlands This was a chance for the students to listen to my story and they were able to ask me any questions they wished. The school will be monitoring their attainment levels and myself and Aquinas will be supporting the school along the way. This is a pivotal year for these students and we wish them all the determination and dedication in the world”.

Jermaine was taken on a tour of the school where he visited the classrooms during lessons and joined in with what the children were doing. He took time to talk to the students of all ages and they were thrilled to have him walk into their classrooms!

He had lots of signed footballs, which will be given to the students from the chosen group.

He then presented an inspirational talk which kept the target audience positively engaged. Everyone was captivated by what he had to say… it was great to see both the girls and boys so interested in his back story and what his life was like growing up. Jermaine explained how important education is and that we really have to push ourselves in order to succeed in a world with so much competition.

The day was a huge success and this is what the school had to say;

The Landau Forte students, who will sit their GCSE examinations next summer, came prepared with lots of questions for Jermaine about the dedication it takes to succeed and thrive under pressure.

At the start of their crucial GCSE year, Jermaine’s advice to students was that, if they aim high and make the most of the opportunities available at the College, they can achieve more than they ever thought possible.

Following the visit Alison Brannick, the College’s Principal, said:

“2016 was a record year in terms of our GCSE results but we are always looking for ways to improve. Jermaine is someone our students look up to as a successful young man from just a few miles away and his advice will be invaluable to their efforts this year.”

 Levi Treasure in Year 11 said:

I really enjoyed meeting Jermaine, it was a worthwhile and inspirational experience”.
